Life Along The St. Vrain

I went looking for a natural area near my home to photograph but what I found changed both my life as well as others.   The initial driving force behind my project was to capture photographically a natural area that has survived and endured with human activity in its midst. I have had the great fortune to find just such a place very close to my home. I have been welcomed onto an area along St. Vrain Creek in Boulder County, Colorado, inhabited by a family that has farmed and ranched and carved a life from this land for the past four generations. They have practically become my family. This piece of land, other than farming and ranching over the past 150 years, has managed to escape a good portion of development and commercialization that has taken so much of the natural habitat wildlife needs to survive. This is a special place.   As I walked and investigated all parts of the farm, my memories as a boy walking and playing through the woods, the fields and the swamps, all came back to me. Building hides and sitting in them, watching the world without it seeing me, gave me a child-like joy I hadn’t felt for many years.
